Our Real Heroes in Coronavirus Crisis

Amidst the biggest crisis for humanity of the century, we continue to hear the staggering numbers of deaths. It is a somber time for reflection, prayer and forced behavior change. And it is a time to appreciate how much worse it could be, as it is in some developing countries.

And yet this crisis has exposed the cracks in our culture, institutions and mindset- the focus on individual rights has prevented some states from enacting stay-at-home orders until the end of March, and some are not even there yet.  People are buying guns at an alarming rate – victims of fear and scarcity mindset.  The President and the governors are confusing the American people by their lack of unity and commitment in such a deep crisis, while the governors of NY and NJ (the hardest hit states) are trying to hold it together bravely and brilliantly.  Our medical workers are struggling valiantly against all odds. Even the courageous Dr. Fauci is getting death threats.

Our Muslim leaders are reminding us to see this crisis as an opportunity to go inward and deeply reflect on how we are living as ethical spiritual beings. I just listened to Imam Feisal Rauf’s Juma Khutba on Zoom and it was so uplifting- Click https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_mx8vq6khTKmViB7o_oA6Gw to register. He reminded us that this crisis is a reminder from God to reflect and go deeper into our spirit to imbue the values that all faiths have preached, which is beauty in our human interactions and I would add with Nature.  Ironically – by stopping human interactions-we are given this opportunity to see how we live those ethical values and what we might change when and if we survive this.

We don’t have to look far to see the true ethical beings in our lives.  The real heroes are our Doctors, Nurses, hospital workers who are putting their lives on the line
