Teaching Crucial Conversations ( a course by Vital Smarts) today at my company reminded me again of how absent this skill is from our day-to-day life. How easy it is for us to go “reptilian” , versus engaging our evolved brain? I find it fascinating that while the human brain has had the capacity to think deeply and reflectively, we find in the 21st century a level of discourse – even in developed societies that even reptiles would shrink from. The more tools we have for communications, the less deeply and humanly are we able to communicate. Is it worthwile exploring why this is so, or should we just get to work one human at a time?
